Across Lite : Registering with Internet Explorer(tm)

These instructions have been tested with Versions 2.1, 3.0x, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x and 6.0. Procedures for other versions may vary. Check the online help for Internet Explorer for instructions on adding viewers.

Before you register Across Lite with Internet Explorer, ensure that Internet Explorer is installed correctly and that you can access WWW sites and download files using Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer 3.1 or later versions (4.x, 5.x, 6.x)

  1. Start up Internet Explorer(tm).
  2. Click on Edit (or Explorer in version 5.2 and later) and then Preferences in the IE menu (or Click on Preferences in the Toolbar if available).
  3. In the dialog box that appears, click on File Helpers under Receiving Files section (you may have to click on Receving Files to expose items in that section if they are not already available)
  4. Then click on Add... button
  5. Enter Across Crossword in the Description field.
  6. Enter .puz in the Extension field.
  7. Enter application/x-crossword in the MIME Type field.
  8. Click on Browse... button in the File type section.
  9. Go to the Across Lite 2.0 folder using the dialog box that comes up and Select Across Lite program.
    The name of the Across Lite program should now appear next to Application and the File Creator box may get filled with AcRs
  10. The File type may get filled with Apzl. If not, click on the pop-up list next to File type and select Apzl from the list. You may ignore this step if you do not find it in the list.
  11. Make sure AcRs is entered in the File Creator box.
  12. Click on Binary Data for Encoding (if it is not already selected).
  13. Click on the popup list next to How to handle: in the Handling part and select View with Application.
    The Across Lite icon and program name should appear next to Application:. If it does not click on Browse button in the Handling section and select the Across Lite program from the Across Lite folder again.
  14. Click on OK.
Internet Explorer 3.0
  1. Start up Internet Explorer(tm).
  2. Click on Edit and then Preferences in the menu bar (or Click on Preferences in the Toolbar).
  3. In the dialog box that appears, click on Helpers on the left side of the dialog. Click on Add... button on the right.
  4. Enter Across Crossword in the Description field.
  5. Enter application/x-crossword in the MIME Type field.
  6. Enter .puz in the Suffixes field.
  7. Click on Binary check box (if it is not already selected).
  8. Click on Choose in the Handling part.
  9. Go to the Across lite folder using the dialog box that comes up and Select Across Lite program.
    The name of the Across Lite program should now appear on the left of the Choose button and the pulldown menu on top of it should read Use a Helper Application.
  10. Enter Apzl in the File Type field.
  11. Click on New.
  12. Click on OK.

The program is now registered as a helper application with Internet Explorer(tm).

Internet Explorer 2.x

  1. Start up Internet Explorer(tm).
  2. Click on Options and then General Preferences... in the menu bar.
  3. In the panel selectors at the top, select Helpers
  4. Click the Create New Type... button.
  5. In the dialog box that pops up enter application as the Mime Type and x-crossword as the Mime Subtype. Click on OK.
  6. In the File Extensions edit line enter just the three letters PUZ.
  7. In the Action checkbox list, select Launch the Application.
  8. Use the Browse button to locate the Across Lite Program file and select it.
  9. Click on OK.
  10. Select Save Options in the Options menu.

The program is now registered as a helper application with Internet Explorer(tm).
