Across Lite : Registering with Netscape Navigator or Communicator(tm)


These instructions have been tested with Versions 2.0 - 7.x of Netscape Navigator. Procedures for other versions may vary. Check the online help for Netscape Navigator for instructions on adding viewers.

Before you register Across Lite with Netscape Navigator, ensure that Netscape Navigator is installed correctly and that you can access WWW sites and download files using Netscape Navigator.

Netscape Navigator/Communicator version 7.x

  1. Start up Netscape Navigator/Communicator(tm).
  2. Click on Edit (on Netscape in Mac OS X version) and then Preferences... in the menu bar.
  3. In the category list on the left of the screen that comes up, click on Helper Applications that is a sub-section under Navigator section (Note: if the tiny triangle before the word Navigator is pointing sideways, you will have to click on it to expose the subsections Languages and Applications below the Navigator section)
  4. Now click the New Type... button.
  5. In the dialog box that pops up enter Across crossword as the Description of Type, puz in the File Extensions line. application/x-crossword as the MIME Type.
  6. Click on the Choose button and use the file dialog to go to the Across Lite folder and select("open") the Across Lite program.
  7. Click on OK.
  8. Click on OK again to close the first dialog box.

The program is now registered as a helper application with Netscape Navigator/Communicator(tm).

Netscape Navigator/Communicator version 4.x - 6.x

  1. Start up Netscape Navigator/Communicator(tm).
  2. Click on Edit and then Preferences... in the menu bar.
  3. In the category list on the left of the screen that comes up, click on Applications that is a sub-section under Navigator section (Note: if the tiny triangle before the word Navigator is pointing sideways, you will have to click on it to expose the subsections Languages and Applications below the Navigator section)
  4. Now click the New... button.
  5. In the dialog box that pops up enter Across crossword as the Description, application/x-crossword as the Mime Type and puz in the Suffixes line.
  6. In the Handled By section, select Application.
  7. The Choose button should now get enabled. Click on the Choose button and use the file dialog to go to the Across Lite folder and select("open") the Across Lite program.
  8. Now back in the Edit type dialog, the File type should show Apzl
  9. Click on OK.
  10. Click on OK again to close the first dialog box.

The program is now registered as a helper application with Netscape Navigator/Communicator(tm).

Netscape Navigator version 3.x

  1. Start up Netscape Navigator(tm).
  2. Click on Options and then General Preferences... in the menu bar.
  3. In the panel selectors at the top, select Helpers.
  4. Click the New... button.
  5. In the dialog box that pops up enter Across crossword as the Description, application/x-crossword as the Mime Type and puz in the Suffixes line.
  6. In the Handled By section, select Application.
  7. The browse button should now get enabled. Click on the Browse button and use the file dialog to go to the Across Lite folder and select("open") the Across Lite program.
  8. Now back in the new type dialog, ignore File type (or leave it on TEXT) and click on OK.
  9. Click on OK again to close the first dialog box.

The program is now registered as a helper application with Netscape Navigator(tm).

Netscape version 2.x

  1. Start up Netscape Navigator(tm).
  2. Click on Options and then General Preferences... in the menu bar.
  3. In the panel selectors at the top, select Helpers
  4. Click the Create New Type... (or New...) button.
  5. In the dialog box that pops up enter application as the Mime Type and x-crossword as the Mime Subtype. Click on OK.
  6. In the File Extensions edit line enter just the three letters PUZ.
  7. In the Action checkbox list, select Launch the Application.
  8. Use the Browse button to locate the Across Lite Program file and select it.
  9. Click on OK.
  10. Select Save Options in the Options menu.

The program is now registered as a helper application with Netscape Navigator(tm).
