Downloading crossword

Solutions:

Problem: I click to download the crossword. Nothing happens.

Solution: Try the following. Click RIGHT mouse button on the link on the web page to download the crossword. In the popup menu that comes up, select the command to save to disk. This brings up a file selection dialog box. Select a folder that you know how to get to later to download the file (e.g., the Desktop or My Documents) and download. Now start up Across Lite and use Open command in its File menu to select the downloaded file. If this does not work, then there may be a problem with the web site itself. Contact the support for the web site from where you are downloading.

Problem: The crossword seems to download but right at the end I get an error message.

Solution: The solution depends on the error message you get. See different cases below.

(1) If you get an error message of the type "Cannot open this file for reading...."

This is a problem with the Internet Explorer browser running out of space in its Temporary Folders area. You can usually fix it by, going to browser options and deleting the Temporary Internet Files in one of the preference panels. If that does not work, you can go to C:\windows\Temporary Internet Files using Windows Explorer, and deleting all the folders and files in there (this is safe to do) and then restart the web browser.

If the problem persists, click RIGHT mouse button on the puzzle download link and select "Save Target As" from the popup menu that comes up. This will bring up a file save window for you to save the crossword to any directory that you specify. Choose a conspicuous directory and save the file. You can then open this file using Across Lite program.

(2) If you get an error message from a program like Adobe Acrobat saying it is not a valid PDF (or some other file)...

The web browser is using a different program to open the crossword than Across Lite. The best solution is to do a complete install of Across Lite program and let the installation program do the reconfiguration of the browser.

If you want to do the configuration manually on Windows XP and Windows 2000,

Problem: I get virus warnings when downloading.

Solution: The crossword files are not programs and are created only via authorized programs and cannot contain viruses. Make sure that what you are downloading is a file with a filename ending in .puz. To be safe do not double-click on such a file after downloading to open it. You may occasionally get false signals when you download a crossword. You can safely ignore this.

If some virus protection software you have is making it impossible for you to download, either temporarily disable the virus software or try the following. Click RIGHT mouse button on the link on the web page to download the crossword. In the popup menu that comes up, select the command to save to disk. This brings up a file selection dialog box. Select a folder that you know how to get to later to download the file (e.g., the Desktop or My Documents) and download. You can open this crossword using File->Open from the Across Lite program menu.

Problem: I click on link to download. I see a long line of text starting with ACROSS&DOWN and what look like clues on the web page.

Solution: Either the web site has problems in serving the crossword correctly or your web browser configuration has become corrupted.

A quick workaround is as follows: Click RIGHT mouse button on the link on the web page to download the crossword. In the popup menu that comes up, select the command to save to disk. This brings up a file selection dialog box. Select a folder that you know how to get to later to download the file (e.g., the Desktop or My Documents) and download. You can open this crossword using File->Open from the Across Lite program menu.

If the problem with the web site continues, check downloading the crossword from another web site to see if the problem is with your web browser. If it seems to be happening at multiple sites, re-install the Across Lite program for it to reconfigure the web browser.

Problem: The program tries to install itself every time I download a crossword.

Solution: The web browser is using the Across Lite installation program as the program to use to open the crossword when you download. This typically happens if the step to install the program is omitted and the installation program is selected as the program to use when downloading a crossword or when double-clicking on a crossword file.

To fix this problem, close all running programs and double-click on the Across Lite installation file acl2setup.exe to install Across Lite. After a successful installation, delete ALL copies (if you have it downloaded multiple times) of the installation program acl2setup.exe and then reboot.
